New global branding web and e-commerce work for Zerofit

Although Zerofit is an international sports and lifestyle brand from Japan, the European arm is based in Antrim. Michael Morton co-owner of Zerofit was so impressed by the work I’d done for Minnis Brands, a multi-brand fashion, leisure and sports agency, that he asked me to rebrand and redesign the global brand and website for Zerofit.

Zerofit is the most advanced range of base layers in the world, far superior in terms of materials and technology than Under Armour. Following a Brand Sprint with Michael and his team, I created a new global design and digital strategy base on the strapline ‘No other baselayer is made this way’. I positioned the products as a futuristic solution using advanced materials that will keep athletes and everyday users warm no matter what the weather.

The parent company in Japan were so impressed with my designs and brand strategy they asked me to build their new website including a Woo Commerce shop. In the middle of lockdown I also directed a series of brand and product imagery using original photography and video with video in Belfast.

New Partnership with Brooklyn’s Lifestyle 2020

In the summer of 2020 we launched a new partnership with Brooklyn’s Lifestyle in New York.

Nat Creary is the founder of Brooklyn’s Lifestyle a hyper-local digital magazine about all things Brooklyn in New York. Nat and I already worked together to design the first stage of the of the Brooklyn’s Lifestyle brand. In 2020 we’ve taken the brand and the website much further and created a fresh new voice for style, food, fashion, beauty, real estate and culture in Brooklyn.

We’ve used bold imagery that makes a big impact and expresses the cultural and lifestyle themes of the new site. Our aim is to grow the users and subscribers to the site and attract lots of new advertisers and sponsors which already include Cup of Brooklyn, Fushimi and Mercedes-Benz.

It’s a great privilege to be able to work with Nat as the East Coast of the USA starts to emerge from the Covid-19 lockdown and build a site that has so many useful features for Brooklyn residents in areas such as outdoor dining, restaurants in NYC offering home delivery and some ways to support black-owned businesses.

Design is at its best when helping to break down cultural and international barriers.

Our exciting new brand identity and website for Chelsea Corporate in London

Chelsea Corporate is a London business broking firm specialising in helping buyers buy businesses in the UK. Impressed by our portfolio of work for a range of international clients, they asked us to completely refresh and reducing their brand identity and to apply it to all their brand, print, social and website.

Lead designer Eugene Burns took on board the client’s desire to keep the hexagon shape that was already an established part of the brand and developed a fresh hexagon-based design.

On the surface this is a traditional hexagon but look closely and you see it’s a ‘hand drawn’ rather than a geometric shape. There’s a human element, an intelligence behind the design, the kind of intelligence that drives buying decisions in business.

Having established the new logo, icon and typography he went on to look at creating a new visual language for the brand. The connected Cs of the logo and icon echo the name Chelsea Corporate itself while the hexagon suggests not only business connections but the connection that occur in nature and architecture.

Ease the pain of pitching and presenting

Pitches and presentations are the lifeblood of business. They’re how we deliver ideas and win new business. They’re how we talk to colleagues and other audiences too. Everyone has Powerpoint, but it tends to make even the brightest ideas dull and flat. Its strength is its ubiquity. But the ‘one damn word after another’ approach highlights a weakness in design, typography and engagement. Pitching and presenting are a pain. Eudeck helps you fix the problem.

If you want to be more persuasive, memorable and engaging as a presenter, you need to take advantage of three features of the human brain.

We’re hardwired to consume visuals

The more visual your presentation is, the more memorable it will be. Between 80 and 90% of the information our brain processes comes in through our eyes. Two-thirds of your brain’s electrical activity is dedicated to vision when your eyes are open. We’re hardwired to consume visuals.

The second factor is our human liking for stories. We tend to remember stories rather than random data. Personal stories make up 65% of our conversations. A fact that’s rooted in the way stories affect our brains. Thirdly our brains respond powerfully to two-way conversations. When you have a conversation with someone, your brain starts to mirror theirs – a process known as neural coupling.

Fearless Design – the spark to faster growth

Music is an inspiration for designers. It offers a template for new ways of thinking and innovative new approaches to fearless design and faster growth.

Legendary former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, the Scottish-born musician with an Irish name, in his book ‘How Music Works’ examines why architecture, technology and local economies have played a lead role in creating and promoting different types of musical genres over the centuries. Byrne has always taken a bold and fearless approach to his music and pioneered many new approaches to composition and sonic creativity since the early days of Talking Heads in 1970s New York.

Byrne collaborator Annie Clark, better known as indie art-rocker St Vincent, uses unusual guitar tunings to create innovative new sounds and unexpected results in her Grammy-winning compositions. Her ‘sculpting the ether’ approach has parallels in graphic and web design that combines text, imagery, space and code to form new kinds of experiences. Have a look at this 3D video and with a St Vincent soundtrack for starters. Note you can navigate the video in 3D if you use the Chrome browser.

Branding your billion dollar startup

You’ve probably heard that London-based Improbable are the latest billion dollar startup. I have no connection the company apart from the fact that they’re based in my old office in Farringdon in Central London. It’s fun to think that we left some creative energy hanging in the air for the new tenants to breathe in – especially as their simulation platform owes quite a bit to the world of the Matrix.

You can be fairly sure Improbable wouldn’t have such a high valuation if their brand and trademarks weren’t in order and that they’ve taken the time to get the right brand and trademark protection in place for their business and their platform.

Without the right brand and trademark protection you could find your startup doesn’t have the value you’d expect

You may have already built your website, your brand identity and your social media channels, but if you haven’t had the time or the inclination to get expert advice your startup and your product could be in a serious situation. Without the right brand and trademark protection you could find your startup doesn’t have the value you’d expect.

It’s not enough to have a brand. You need to have a brand that’s unique and one you can defend and protect when it comes to seeking major investment and when registering your name and trademark for international markets. And don’t make the mistake that because you can register a domain name that’s all you’ll ever need.

Branding – your future has already happened

Language can imprison and constrain human ideas and thinking. That’s the theme of Arrival, one of the most successful and thought-provoking movies in recent months. Understanding the language of an extraterrestrial race helps the main character played by Amy Adams realise she can break away from the constraints of traditional thinking and embrace her future. The future has already happened.

This idea resonates with my thinking on the total brand experience approach to design and business growth. Successful twenty-first century brands are not fixed. They’re not immutably encoded in fixed ideas and thinking. They move and grow. They evolve. They tell a fluid yet logical story that’s unique to the brand – unique to you. Your total brand experience includes the future as well as the past and present of your brand. It helps you create your future. It’s everything you do.

Your total brand experience includes the future as well as the past and present of your brand

Every great brand tells a great story and the future growth and development of your brand is already far from unknown. You can know where you want to go, know or have insight into what your future will be and plan for growth and revolution. Branding and design are an ongoing process that helps you grow your brand and build your future too.
